The July 9 presidential election in Indonesia, home to the world’s largest Muslim population, will when the final vote is tallied mark the country’s handover of power from one directly elected president to another. The outgoing president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who is constitutionally barred from seeking a third term, has been criticized for not doing enough for the nation’s progress. The election has been contested between Prabowo Subianto, a former general from the era of dictatorial President Suharto, and Joko Widodo, governor of Jakarta. Both candidates have claimed victory based on separate quick counts. The official results will be announced on July 22.
